Experience BUT at Researchers' Night: When a Game Becomes Art
What does a board game have in common with art? Perhaps more than you might think at first glance. Visitors to Researchers' Night will discover that game design is far from being the domain of technical fields at the exhibition of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Center BUT Tržnice.
Game, sensitivity, relationship. These are the characteristics of the authorial board games awaiting visitors to Researchers' Night in the centre of Brno. “In the context of art and design, communication is an integral part of all the processes that bring new products, works, ideas or atmospheres to life,” explains Lucie Polášková from FFA.
It is precisely the combination of games, art and design that creates space for unconventional game principles and unique visual approaches. Games are therefore shaped not only by rules and game mechanics, but also by experience with experimental and artistic creation. “There is always more to discover and explore in the field of game design and art,” says Polášková, adding that the exhibition will also feature a selection of current student work alongside the board games.
Game design is an independent field of study at FFA. At the Game Media Studio, students focus on game development and its application across different artistic approaches and media. Games thus become a space for continuous exploration, but also a means of creating connections between people and communicating without words.
And what should visitors take away from Researchers' Night? “Ideally, the knowledge that such a young field as game design can be studied beyond purely technical disciplines, right here at the Faculty of Fine Arts at BUT,” the artist concludes.

Researchers' Night takes place on Friday, 25 September, with all BUT faculties and units taking part. Laboratories, classrooms and research facilities will open their doors to the public and offer a programme full of experiments, interactive demonstrations and opportunities to meet scientists.
